A Step Forward with Personal Transportation

A Step Forward with Personal Transportation

Any adult who has watched The Jetsons as a child know that one day, walking will become a thing of the past. The Segway came, and everyone got a little more hopeful – it’s fun, you don’t have to walk and it’s pretty useful, but only if you’re travelling on a completely flat surface! While we may not have a personal hovercraft that zips through the air a là Jetsons style now but we believe it will not be too long before we all can surf around on one of these marvellous floating devices. For now, let’s stay grounded with three of our favourite modes of personal transportation.

The Strida

Taking it all in stride is the Strida, a bicycle that eliminates the clunkiness of transporting your ride around by making it one of the lightest and fastest-folding bicycles on the market. This portable city bicycle is belt-driven with a collapsible A-shaped frame, designed and perfected by UK engineer and designer Mark Sanders, who first designed this concept in 1985. In a nutshell, when you see steps, you just need to strap the Strida on your back and you’re good to go (or walk).

This is not a bicycle meant for long commutes but if you’re looking for a breezy ride two blocks down to the nearest kedai runcit for a carton of milk, this is your guy.

MAD Velocifero by Cervello Tres

MAD Velocifero - taken from website

A cross between a mini-scooter and an electric bike, the MAD Velocifero by Cervello Tres has accents of other pedestrian modes of travel: the bamboo footrest echoes the latest generation of skateboards and the fat tyres bring to mind the sturdiness of the Segway. Style and personality the MAD already has in spades, but what else can it bring to the table?

It’s highly customisable, offering five individual motor options between 500 and 1600 watts along with lead-acid and lithium-ion battery options, with distance ranging between 30 to 40km with the lead-acid battery, rising up to 56km with the lithium. Speed tops out at 45 km/h. So, while you can’t take this baby out on the highway, you’re still going to have a lot of fun zooming past the other poor suckers on the sidewalks!

smart wheel balance

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few years you’ll be well aware that there has been a revolution in pedestrian transportation, and this revolutionary movement is called the self-balancing electric scooter, or the Hoverboard (sorry to burst your bubble ‘Back To The Future 2’ fans – despite its name, it doesn’t actually hover).

Looking like a Segway without the handles, it uses self balancing boards with sensors that detects when the rider leans in a certain direction, which then spurs the wheels to that same direction, which means all you need to do to steer this no-fuss piece of transportation is to shift your weight.

It weighs an easy 10-12 kg, and is small enough to stow away under your office desk. Speed caps off at 12km/h with a motor power of 350watt. Which means it’s speedy, it’s light, its battery lasts long and its easy maneuverability makes it practical for indoor and outdoor use. In short, the Hoverboard is what the Segway is – just without handles.
