The much-anticipated Toro Surf Attack 2023 made a splash at Karambunai Beach in Sabah last December 2023, courtesy of the West End Surfing Club – a group of surfers from Karambunai dedicated to promoting the culture of surfing with activities like organising surfing classes, events, and participating in both local and international competitions and community work.
Attendees were thrilled with the myriad of attractions this year, including the Beach Bazaar, Sukan Kampung and Sunset Surf Music. Supported by the Sabah Surfing Association (SSA) as a state surfing association, this event is officially sanctioned by the Persatuan Luncur Ombak Malaysia (PLOM) and judged by International Surfing Association (ISA) certified judges where the points accumulated from this event will be included in the PLOM national ranking system.
Local competitions like this are key for surfers in Borneo and the wider region, to build their careers as professional surfers and athletes – the goal being the prestigious round of competitive events under the World Surf League and the Olympics, which debuted the sports category in 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
