It seems an odd place for a world record to take place but in a small community gym in Brunei, an uproar of cheers and excitement indicates that Abdul Malik Al-Mukkaramah bin Haji Mohd Yusof has done it. The strength athlete set a new Axle Deadlift Static Monster World 2023 x Donuts and Deadlift event, at the Iron Street Gym in Brunei recently, with a record 347 kilogrammes lift to eclipse the 310 kilo marker that Britain’s Daniel Jay had set in the Under-70kg category last year.
Iron Street representatives shared that it was great to witness how strength sports has gained traction in the nation and attracted people from various communities to support or participate.
“It’s really heartwarming to witness how competition brings people together. The competition itself showcased the incredible feats of strengths of brunei’s local athletes and also fosters a sense of community for such a niche market. Strength sports is still in its infancy and it’s so exciting to see how fat it’s grown.”
The various categories included a Men and Women’s open and Under-70 kg. Pengiran Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Kamalruzaman also set a new national record in the Axle Deadlift Static Monster event, with a 365kg lift. To this collective band of strong people, the event was a small celebration of the future that strength sports has in Brunei, and judging by all the donuts they had, a sweet one too.Â
